Ever regret something the moment you do it? Whether it's the wrong words coming out of your overly verbose mouth, or, perhaps, a post on a message board?

 

I'd raise my hands to both examples.  The most recent happening was of the latter occurrence.  Basically, there was a movie discussion and references made to the name of a specific locale.  I notated the spelling was incorrect.  Nothing major, just that they were using a possessive when it was not.  So, thinking I was being helpful to the other 'writers' on the message board, I posted that there was no apostrophe in the bridge's name.  I know I try to be as accurate as possible in my fiction, especially when writing about a specific fandom.  Some of the followers of said fandom can be extremely critical, and you're looking for flames when you make a preventable mistake. 

 

Within moments I was flamed.  The bridge's name was similar to the online identity used by one of the owner's of the message board, so I guess my correction of the spelling ticked off someone.  My mentioning the correct spelling was nothing personal and yet, I was attacked personally. 

 

Suffice to say, I was less than impressed with the maturity of the board members and I said as much.

 

I defended why I posted it, as well as the fact that I took a notepad into the movie.  Yes, I really did that.  My hubby was embarrassed, but I had my reasons.  It was to write down certain details of the movie.  Besides, it was the second time I was seeing it. LOL.  Yep, I plan on seeing it again, too.

 

What movie was it? Resident Evil: Apocalypse.  As an avid Oded Fehr fan, there was no way I was missing a chance to see him on the big screen.  Besides, I thought it was a great, kickass movie.  I like action/adventure movies.  This was action/adventure/horror, but it was a lot of fun.  Anyone who goes to these movies looking for Oscar material are setting themselves up for disappointment.  Most critics slammed the movie, but the New York Times gave it a pretty good review.

 

Anyway...back to the point of this ramble.  I posted my outrage at being attacked, that the forum was simple-minded and I would not be back...and that I wanted my stories removed from the website.  Two of the owners of the site/message board have contacted me, offering sincere apologies, so now I'm trying to decide whether I want to stay or not. 

 

Will I still be welcome there by the other members...will I be attacked by those that cannot accept or abide my sensibilities? Is it worth the stress in my already stressful life?

 

So, as I end this entry, I still have no answers to those questions.  What would ya'll do?

I wouldn't let the immaturity of a few prevent my enjoyment of a site. What you did was sincere, and only offered as a gesture of being helpful. I'd stick around because that will probably annoy them more than if I left. I always take the stance: "No one runs me off my patch!" o:)

Early in my Internet days I was thrown off a message board. They banned me from the board for a statement that was taken way out of context.

So many things seem to come into play with written text. The mood of the writer and most of all the mood of the reader(s).

A simple statement such as, "I hope you had fun!" can be interpreted in so many ways! Try saying something like, "That was a stupid thing to say" and leave off the smiley face at the end! Wow, everyone gets up on their soap box!!!

But, Reading this journal entry sure brought a smile to my face.

I have to agree with Kalita. I'm sure that those few people do not represent the majority of users on the site. You cannot let a few misguided individuals ruin the experience. That's why the "ignore user" feature on many sites is such a wonderful tool.

Seems like we haven't chatted via email lately, but I do know what happened, and thought that you did what you've always done - conducted yourself with a level of maturity that is admirable.
